Ophelia is being courted by Hamlet at the beginning of the play, but Hamlet jilts her in the middle of the play, telling her to run to a monastery and become a nun. But, Hamlet murdering her father, Polonius, is most likely where she breaks down. Some scholars suggest that Ophelia could represent an outlet for Hamlet to vent the frustrations he feels connected to his mother.
