For valuable fir trees to be free to grow, wisdom held, competing plants had to be cut, uprooted and poisoned. And I thought, Thats what were missing. She understood that communities like hers had to make a living from the forest, and that meant felling trees. And I traced how those carbon molecules went back and forth between the birch and fir and they didn't actually end up in the cedars. It would have looked great on merch. Those branching networks are capable of rapid response to environmental change and of forming mycorrhizal attachments to plants through which they can transport nutrients and water in the soil to those plants in exchange for their photosynthetically generated sugars. Even those pine saplings growing in the direct shade of birch received enough benefit from the sugars flowing from the faster growing trees, not to speak of the resistance to disease-causing bacterias conveyed by the birchs roots, to offset the diminished access to light and allow the tree to grow.
